Polyaspartic vs. Epoxy: Why Cure Time Changes the Job
Epoxy and polyaspartic land in roughly the same place — a hard, sealed, good-looking floor. The difference is the calendar. A 100% solids epoxy build wants overnight between coats and several days before it will take a car without printing tire marks. Coverage and How to Measure Your Garage
Rated 300–500 sq ft. That spread isn't marketing hedging, it's porosity. A tight, previously sealed slab takes the coating thin and gets you near the top of the range. A thirsty, broom-finished, never-sealed slab drinks the first coat and lands you closer to 300.
Measure length × width, then add about 10% for the apron and any step-downs. Most two-car garages run 400–600 sq ft; a 20×20 is exactly 400. If your number is near the top of the range, or the concrete is bare and porous, buy the extra material up front. Running out mid-broadcast is the one mistake on this job you cannot fix cleanly.
One honest note: this is a medium broadcast kit. If you want a dense, wall-to-wall flake floor with no base color showing through, this kit doesn't carry enough flake or clear on its own — the full broadcast polyaspartic kit is the right system for that.
Indoor and Outdoor: UV Stable, Won't Yellow
This is where polyaspartic separates from epoxy on merit rather than marketing. Epoxy ambers under sunlight — a light gray floor near a west-facing door goes warm and blotchy over a couple of summers, and there's no fixing it short of recoating. Polyaspartic is UV stable and won't yellow, which is why this system is approved for patios, balconies, walkways, and pool decks as well as garages. If your door spends half the year open, this matters more than the spec sheet makes it sound.
Hot Tire Pickup, Chemicals, and Abrasion
Hot tire pickup is what kills cheap garage floor paint. You pull in after a highway run, hot rubber grabs the coating, and it lifts in patches the next time you back out. This system is rated to resist it. It also stands up to abrasion, impact, and the usual garage chemistry — motor oil, brake fluid, coolant, gasoline, road salt. The finish is gloss with skid resistance built in, and it resists blistering.
Work between 45°F and 90°F. A cold slab drags out the cure; a hot one shortens working time that's already short.
Surface Prep — the Step That Decides Everything
Nearly every failed garage floor coating is a prep failure, not a product failure. The coating is only ever as good as its grip on the concrete.
- Degrease and scrub out every oil stain. Coating over oil guarantees a bond failure exactly where you park.
- Profile the slab — grind or acid etch until it feels like 120-grit sandpaper underfoot. A slick, power-troweled floor will not hold a coating.
- Fill cracks and spalls, and let the patch cure fully before you coat.
- Check for moisture: tape a 2 ft × 2 ft sheet of plastic to the slab overnight. Condensation underneath means vapor is moving up through the concrete, and you need a moisture barrier primer before anything else.
- Vacuum, then vacuum again. Dust is a bond breaker.
Color and Flake Options
Five blends. Designer Gray runs a light gray base with light, medium, and dark gray flake. Gray carries black, white, and light blue. Khaki Tan mixes brown, tan, beige, and coppertone. Desert Tan brings ivory, navy, green, and burgundy. Beige goes black, white, and brown. Heavier flake hides slab imperfections and everyday dirt better than a solid color — if your concrete has seen some life, lean into the broadcast.
